05 Nov Our Little Hour Returns to the Stage
As part of Black History Month 2024, Neil Reidman (Doctor Who, EastEnders, Detectorists) stars in Our Little Hour — the powerful new musical drama inspired by the life of footballer and World War I hero Walter Tull.
Staged at the Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal Bath, Our Little Hour tells the remarkable story of Tull, the grandson of a Barbadian slave who rose to become Britain’s first Black professional footballer and later the first man of his heritage to be commissioned as an officer in the British Army.
Written by Dougie Blaxland with music by Chris Anthony, the production was commissioned by Show Racism the Red Card and celebrates courage, equality, and the enduring human spirit.
In the play, Neil portrays Tull’s father — a role that resonates deeply with his own Windrush heritage. Speaking to the Bath Chronicle, he reflected on the play’s relevance today:
“It’s a celebration of Black culture and British history. It’s fun and light-hearted in parts, but also deeply moving. We talk about Walter Tull in the Battle of the Somme — it’s very educational and inspiring for all ages.”
Our Little Hour continues to tour UK venues, bringing Walter Tull’s story — and Neil’s moving performance — to new audiences nationwide.
Director Amanda Horlock describes Our Little Hour as
“A celebration of the life of an extraordinary man whose pioneering spirit continues to inspire the campaign for justice and equality. This production honours the memory of one of the most significant figures in British sporting and military history.”
Paul Kearns, Director of Operations at Show Racism the Red Card, adds that the show
“Tells a really important story which will help to reinforce the work we’re doing to combat racism by engaging new audiences in a celebration of Walter Tull’s pioneering contribution to British society.”
The 2026 revival opens at The Greenwich Theatre on 3rd February before touring the UK through to the end of March.
